TypeEs are
usually entrepreneurs, top executives, leaders and innovators.
Their eyes are on the future, their hands are in the present and
their hearts are focused on infinity. Only an estimated 5 to 10
percent of the population has successfully harnessed the TypeE
personality. These amazing people have a passion for life, and
they live for new adventures.
While only
a small number of people display this TypeE personality, it is
far from an elite group that believes itself to be better than
those around them. In fact, TypeEs typically reach out to reawaken
others’ creative genius.
They understand
that everyone has a limitless potential which can only be reined
in by the choices they make or the limits they place on themselves.
They refuse time and again to be beaten down or discouraged when
they fail or when someone laughs at their dreams and aspirations.
They are the survivors of a system steeped in doubt, caught-up
in a herd mentality.
Free E-like
spirits abound, but most are rarely encouraged to flourish. They
become locked inside an adult striving to make-do because something
or someone in their life imposed limits on them. The “E”
in TypeE stands for Edge, Excellence, Energy and Exceptional,
among other things. But above all, it stands for Everyone. There
are clear indications that virtually everyone starts out their
life as a passionate, creative TypeE.
Research
Research on creativity indicates that the vast majority of small
children are in fact, creative geniuses. A study was conducted
by George Land, a world renowned general systems scientist with
a background in anthropology, communications, business and education.
It focused on 1,600 children in the early days of the Headstart
program in the United States.
They were
given eight tests covering divergent, creative thinking over the
course of several years. The first tests were given when the children
were between the ages of 3 and 5. Ninety-eight percent of the
children scored in the genius category. When these same children
took identical tests five years later, only 32 percent scored
at that level. Five years later it was down to only 10 percent.
Two thousand
adults over the age of 25 also took the same tests. Only 2 percent
scored at the genius level. There is a strong indication that
the education and socialization process negatively affected their
ability to express their creativity, which gradually dropped off
as they grew older. Learning to accept others’ opinions,
evaluations and beliefs above their own came with a price tag.
It undermined their ability to think globally, out of the box.
But what of the survivors? How did these individuals manage to
make it through the system with their creativity and passion intact?
The answer became apparent as I worked with more than 10,000 of
these highly motivated and successful, individuals. It seemed
that the specialized physiology, self-acceptance and supportive
environment of this TypeE population provided a natural immunity
from being numbed by the educational and socialization process.
ADD/ADHD
I had seen this type of physiological profile before. But normally
it is associated with a disorder, not a measure of success. This
profile bares similar physiological indicators of those diagnosed
with Attention Deficit Disorder [ADD] and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder [ADHD]. However, the self-acceptance and supportive environment
which nurture the TypeE’s life are usually lacking in the
typical ADD/ADHD profile.
Most TypeEs
can be thought of as being at the successful end of the ADD/ADHD
spectrum. Instead of seeing themselves as limited by the distractibility,
impulsivity, hyperactivity and lack of focus this disorder can
bring, these highly successful TypeEs have turned their liability
into an advantage.
As they fully
embrace their uniqueness, gifts and desires and find a home, school
or work environment which supports their specialized mental and
physical patterns, these same individuals, once considered problems
to be fixed, are miraculously transformed into gifted TypeEs.
The natural ability we are born with, to create and achieve the
impossible, is brought back home, allowing them to make landmark
contributions to society.
